My last post was a bit lengthy so here is something short and (hopefully) fun! Rather than bore you to tears with updates from the life of a writer instead check out a couple of original extreme shorties.
Just a little intro here for you, I promise it'll be short. Recently (in January) I was invited by Kevin J. Kennedy to contribute to 100 Word Horrors 2, his follow-up to the successful anthology, 100 Word Horrors. Having seen the vast number of my writer friends who were involved in the first edition I was flattered to even be asked. Trying to write a story of exactly 100 words is far more difficult than it seems since I, like most of my colleagues, can practically write a 100 word sentence so attempting to write a coherent and interesting full story in that small amount is insanely difficult. Luckily, three submissions were allowed per author so I had three chances to Wow on this one... and it was a good thing. I had one 100 word drabble on hand and I semi-quickly wrote two more to give myself a chance of getting one accepted. As luck would have it Kevin did accept one of the three but that leaves me with two little drabbles without a home. Since I'm unlikely to find a home for them out there somewhere I've decided to share them here with you. Enjoy!
This first little drabble is one I came up with on the fly. While I enjoyed writing it I am kind of glad it was not accepted for 100 Word Horrors 2 since I don't think it's the best example of my writing though it was still fun to do.
An End To Nothing

Sam collapsed, succumbing to exhaustion. His limbs feeling filled with hot lead. He lay in a grim pool of sweat and stinking viscera which covered him like a gruesome blanket.
He could see chunks of flesh, bone and bowel clinging to him like an army of snails yet lacked even the energy to brush them away. It was unimportant.
He needed to rest though to rest meant his doom. A few deep breaths and the horde were back upon him. Weary, Sam stood raising his bloodstained sword to the sky.
“This is an end to nothing. Come and get some!”

Like it? It's okay if you didn't. This next one is what I turned in as part of the application into The Next Great Horror Writer Contest eventually putting me in the top 25 candidates which was narrowed to 20 and finally to 15 who took part in the grueling 6-ish month long contest. I have to admit I thought this is the one that would make it into 100 Word Horrors 2 but Kevin chose the other one that I wrote which I will also admit came out very nice or, at least, I thought so.

Her heart began to pound in her chest as though it would burst at any moment. The steel bands of anxiety tightened threatening to suffocate her. The last beams of light were coming through the window now, ushering in another nightmare filled night. He only crept in to torment her once the sun went down. Blood dripped to the floor from the dozens of wounds covering her tiny frame.
The last ray of sunlight burned out and died signaling a new night of terror. The last, she hoped.
A tear rolled down her cheek as the door creaked slowly open.

So there you have it, my two failed tries at a drabble or maybe one failure and one semi-failure. The drabble that did make it into 100 Word Horrors 2 is called Doomed and is pretty good if I don't say so myself... but I just did so deal with it! When I finally saw the list of authors who I'll be sharing this anthology with I was amazed that I was able to make it in at all. I mean there are some truly amazing writers in this thing like James Longmore, author & founder of Hellbound Books, Lisa Vasquez, author & founder of Stitched Smile Publications, and Shaun Hutson, who wrote the foreword to the anthology (Kill For A Copy) containing my very first published story! The list of my writer friends in this one is too long to list so needless to say I'm damn proud to even get invited let alone get something accepted. Also this wasn't planned but while I was writing up this very blog post Kevin posted the pre-order link for 100 Word Horrors 2! I swear this was not planned and no, I'm not being sarcastic - it really wasn't planned. So now that I've shown you what didn't make it you can pre-order the book and be among the first to see what did!
